About Concrete Standards

ConcreteStandards.com is an independent educational reference built to make concrete terminology, planning decisions, field practices, calculators, and troubleshooting easier to understand without pretending that one generic number fits every project.

Why the site exists

Concrete advice on the web is often reduced to simple answers: use 4,000 PSI, pour a 4-inch slab, space joints every 10 feet, cure for seven days, or place reinforcement in the middle. Sometimes a simple rule is a reasonable early planning assumption. Other times the correct answer depends on structural loading, soil, exposure, adopted code, project specifications, mixture properties, member geometry, weather, construction sequence, or the product being installed later.

This site is designed around that distinction. We explain the rule of thumb when it is useful, identify its assumptions, and point readers toward the governing project documents or source organization when the decision is not universal.

What you will find here

The Technical Reference covers recurring concepts such as compressive strength, water-cementitious ratio, slump, air entrainment, aggregates, reinforcement, vapor retarders, subgrade, joints, curing, weather, finishing, testing, moisture, chemical exposure, and cracking. Project Guides connect those subjects for real placements such as driveways, garage slabs, house slabs, shops, equipment pads, foundations, industrial floors, and retaining walls. Troubleshooting guides focus on cracks, scaling, dusting, curling, honeycombing, and low strength results.

The calculator section is intentionally functional. Quantity, bag, cost, footing, pier, rebar, joint, slope, and water-cement-ratio tools perform calculations in the browser and show assumptions. Decision tools for curing and PSI are designed to avoid fake engineering precision: they return planning considerations rather than claiming to replace a design professional.

Source hierarchy

We prioritize primary industry and standards organizations when explaining technical concepts. Important sources include the American Concrete Institute (ACI) for structural concrete codes, specifications, and guides; ASTM International for material and testing standards; and the American Cement Association for concrete-material fundamentals. Pages link to those organizations so readers can find the current official publication.

We do not reproduce copyrighted standards. A standard or code is more than a single table or sentence: definitions, exceptions, scope, commentary, referenced documents, and edition all matter. This site paraphrases concepts in original language and identifies where the full standard or project documents control.

Technical pages carry a review date. Standards and guidance evolve, and projects frequently cite an edition different from the newest publication. When an error or ambiguous statement is identified, the goal is to correct the underlying article and any connected tool or table rather than perpetuating the error across duplicate pages.
